In the past walls surrounded the whole city and protected the people from invsions. The walls were built by the Venetians, in the XVIth century, and today only fragmentary remains left to be admired.
Nicosia is still divided. Nowadays, however, the dificulties people had in crosing the border of the Turkish part of the island constitute one of the legends. In the past the restrictions were so severe, especially for the tourists, that they discouraged people from exploring the North Nicosia.
First references to Nicosia were made in the VIIth century, and since the Xth century the city has performed the function of the capital. The years of invasions and often changes of the host created the city’s unique character in regard to both architecture and culture.
Nicosia is the last divided capital city – such information one will receive at the beginning either from the tourist guide or while searching the Internet. The stormy history of the island left its stamp on the biggest city of Cyprus – Nocosia.
