Nicosia
Nicosia is the last divided capital city – such information one will receive at the beginning either from the tourist guide or while searching the Internet. The stormy history of the island left its stamp on the biggest city of Cyprus – Nocosia. The first references to this city, unusual in many aspects, were made in the VIIth century. The remains of the walls remind the times of Byzantium, The Museum of the Handicraft assemble and present a rich collection including the creations of the natives, and the modern buildings remind of the present.
Now the city reflects great heterogeneity with its towering skyscrapers, reminding that Nicosia is the capital city and the business centre of the island, and narrow streets full of little, family workshops.
Nicosia is situated in the centre of the island on the Mesaria plain, from the north it is separated by the Kapason mountains and from the east by the foothills of the Trodoos. In regard to the tourist attractions the city is not equally popular as the holiday resorts situation near the coast of Cyprus, but still it is an important place often visited because of its cultural value.
