The walls

In the past walls surrounded the whole city and protected the people from invsions. The walls were built by the Venetians, in the XVIth century, and today only fragmentary remains left to be admired. In the North Nicosia there are still some bastions which role has been changed in the present times. The moats located near the walls are now used as car parks, one of the bastions serves as the Presidential Palace and another one became The Museum commemorating nation’s fight for its freedom. Among many interesting monuments located in the Turkish part there is, dilapidated by the time and actions of numerous ‘discoverers’, Kyrenia Gate.
