The Venetian Walls
The defensive walls were built such a long time ago (XVI century) that nowadays they are almost unnoticeable for the people of Nicosia. If a tourist is not focused enough on the visited places, he or she may also overlook the remains of the walls. The construction of the defensive walls was based on the project of two great military specialists - Francesco Barbaro and Ascanio Savorgnano. The walls consist of 11 bastions, but nowadays only five of them is located on the Greek side. The Turks completely ignored tradition and eliminated the historical names of the bastions and replaced them with their own ones. The most interesting are the three gates leading to the three more important Cypriot cities - Pafos, Famagusta and Kyrenia.
